I guess temp files are a part of scanning even if you aren't decompressing something? Correct... Virtually all applications create some form of temporary files as part their normal operation. Beyond that many anti-virus program now scan inside compressed executables by default.

If you have 4 to 8MB and a permanent swap file of 10 or 12 MB and the temp var is valid you should not have any problems. I started with more than 11 Mb of permanent swap space, but I reduced it to 8192 kb. The 8MB should be enough but what you may wish to do is free up as much HD space as you dare then restart
